Olympic qualifying preview

Source: http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiedosto:Kazan_Center_from_Fizkorpus.jpg
Kazan city center in winter

The Olympic qualifying tournament will take place in Kazan, Russia, on January 27-29. Finland is represented in women by Saina Savage (+67 kg), Suvi Mikkonen (-57 kg), Juho Kostiainen (-68 kg) and Teemu Heino (+87 kg). The men's team consists entirely of representatives of our club. The team is coached by Jesus Ramal, managed by Jarkko Mäkinen and the physiotherapist is Taekwondo athletes Juho Ranta.

Teemu, Juho and Suvi will play on Saturday, Saina on Sunday.

The participant lists for the series have been published, and here are some educated guesses and random observations based on them.

Women under 57 kg:

As expected, the series is tough, but remarkably smooth. Personally, I would highlight at least Israel's Bat-el Gatterer, who previously won the European Championship and represented his country at the Olympics. In addition, tough names are France's fine lifting representative Marlene Harnois (EC 1st, Univ. 1st) and Italy's Veronica Calabrese (JMM and JEM 1st, MM 3rd). In this club, however, Suvi is completely competitive. Good performances throughout the year are completely comparable to other participants. It can even be said that Mikkonen is among the early favorites. The fact that Ana Zaninovic (CRO), the current number one name in Europe, already obtained a race ticket from the world qualification also has an effect on the matter.

Women over 67 kg:

Saina's series is the smallest of the Games. However, the level is tough. Half of the competitors in the series are competition medalists, and especially the Spanish representative's list of achievements is quite impressive (JMM 1st, EC 1st, WC 1st and a number of lesser medals). I would put Slovenia's Nusa Rajheri as the second favorite. In addition, the representatives of Serbia and Greece have achieved prestigious medals.

With the exception of Simon Alamo, the level of all the fighters in the series may vary from tournament to tournament and they have tactical weaknesses (most notably, Rajher has not taken any points from electronic armor in the tournament, etc.), which can be used to defeat them.

8 UKRAINE F+67 KONIEVA MARYNA 19-10-1987

Men under 68 kg

Juho's series is really interesting. The series is even and you can't name an absolute favorite. Personally, I would say that in addition to Juho, the representatives of Croatia, Israel and Poland can be found in the top places. Even Sweden's Ashna Milad might have a chance. The final order depends a lot on the chart, and for example if Juho is already in the first rounds against Croatia, the result cannot be estimated in advance, but it is about who succeeds in individual solutions. Last time, Croatia won in sudden death, but the preliminary information about the preparation of the Croatians is not very enthusiastic.

Juho is in great shape, and the preparation has gone well. If everything goes without problems on race day, Juho will be really hard to beat.

Men over 87 kg:

Teemu's series is really curly. There are different types of fighters and a lot of experience. Teemu, Zacharia and France's Gentil perhaps represent to some extent the basic heavyweight types, while Italy and Turkey, for example, field athletes who have been successful in smaller divisions, Tanrikulu all the way to an Olympic medal. Success requires good tactical success and finding the right drugs against each opponent. What works against Pascal is definitely not the right tactic to beat the Italian man.

Other series:

In the men's category under 58 kilograms, there is one absolute favorite, Spain's Joel Gonzalez. Representatives of Portugal, Croatia and Russia can bet on the other top places. Germany's Levent Tuncat, who has been injured for a long time, makes his comeback to the delight of all spectators. It is interesting to see how well the "flying German" has gotten into shape.

14 UKRAINE M-58 BODNAR BOGDAN 31-10-1993

In the women's category under 49 kg, Spain is of course the favorite, but Sweden, Turkey, Israel and Germany are coming at a good pace. The representative of Russia can hardly be left out of the bills either, although his selection can be considered a small surprise.

Women under 67 kg:

The favorites in the women's -67 kg category are Greece, Germany and Turkey. Mystakidou is a silver medalist from the Olympic Games in Athens and also represented his country in Beijing. Germany's Fromm is already the European champion from the Italian Games, but has often lost to Turkey in prestigious competitions. The surprise of the series can be, for example, a young Pole who has risen from the bottom of the series to challenge his more experienced competitors.

14 TURKEY F-67 NUR TATAR 16-08-1992

The men's under 80 kg are also extremely interesting. Personally, I would put Germany and France at the top. Competitors from Spain, Armenia, Holland and Greece also have success potential.

15 SPAIN M-80 NICOLAS GARCIA HEMME 20-06-1988
16 SWITZERLAND M-80 ZUBERI FLAMUR 22-11-1990

From the whole tournament, it can be said that a few favorites emerge in advance, but the level is quite even. All Finns have a chance for an Olympic place. I'm guessing two myself, but I'm not going to guess the series they come from. You can't help but upset those who are busy with work, there is an exciting and hard-level tournament coming up. It would be great to witness the culmination of a project that took over a year and a half.

The valid license period is 1.1.-31.12.2012

Everyone participating in the activities of the Finnish Taekwondo Association (camps, competitions, etc.) must have a license from the Finnish Taekwondo Association. All enthusiasts are also recommended to purchase Pohjola's accident insurance when acquiring a license. License insurance is a comprehensive and safe choice. In 2012, the insurance cover is more comprehensive than before, e.g. in terms of physical therapy.
Taekwondo athletes 2011 ry requires a sports license and insurance from all its enthusiasts who participate in events organized by the club, such as belt tests, indoor competitions, seminars, etc. The enthusiast must take care of his own insurance coverage, even if he does not obtain a license for some reason.

NOTE!
Taekwondourheilijat 2011 ry does not charge a separate membership fee, but you become a member of the club by buying a taekwondo license and marking Taekwondourheilijat 2011 as your club.

WHAT DO YOU GET WITH THE LICENSE AND WHAT KIND OF LICENSES ARE AVAILABLE?
Participation in most events of the Finnish Taekwondo Association requires a license. Licenses other than the one-time license automatically include the association's member magazine, mailed to your home four times a year. In addition, those who claim the license will receive a membership card with which you can get a discount of 10 % in the restaurants of the S chain (Amarillot, Fransmannit, Rossot). Licenses for children and young people automatically include full competition rights, adults must choose the most suitable license from the three options.

 1. Children's license for those born on or after January 1, 1998

The license includes the right to free competition. The children's license is also intended for those practicing the ITF style.

2. Youth license for those born between 1 January 1993 and 31 December 1997
The price is 39 euros or 126 euros with Pohjola's accident insurance.
The license includes the right to free competition.

3. Adult high school for those born on December 31, 1992 or earlier

a) hobby license
The price is 49 euros or 174 euros with Pohjola's accident insurance.
The license includes the right to compete only in amateur series.

4. Single License

The price is 35 euros. This license is intended for participation in a one-time event of the Taekwondo Association (competitions, camps, etc.). The license is only valid for one, separately named event. The license does not include the Taekwondo magazine vintage. The user of the one-time license must himself ensure that sufficient insurance coverage is valid. The one-time license is valid for 10 days from the moment of payment.

5. Endorsement License

The price is 25 euros. This license is intended, for example, for family members of those who practice taekwondo or others who want to support the activities of the Taekwondo Association. In addition to the support membership card, the license also includes a subscription to the Taekwondo magazine mailed to your home.

HOW DOES THE PURCHASE OF A LICENSE TAKE PLACE?
1. License renewal. If you have previously paid a license fee, you will receive a renewal form at home. After checking the correctness of your information (address, phone number, etc.), you can pay the fee. You must always use the reference number when paying. If for some reason you do not receive an extension form, proceed as in obtaining a new license (below).

2. New license. Go to the online purchase of the license at https://sporttilisenssi.slu.fi/index.php?lid=5171  and follow the instructions. The link to purchase a license can also be found on the taekwondo association's website: www.taekwondo.fi

1. Personal data
Fill in your personal information on the form.

2. License Information
Check your personal information. Choose Taekwondo athletes 2011 as a club, and a license that suits you. NOTE! When buying a support license, select "Support license" as the company.

3. Acceptance
Check the information of your chosen license and familiarize yourself with Sporttiturva's product description and insurance conditions. The insurance terms must be accepted before proceeding to payment.

4. Payment
Pay either directly via the bank buttons or print/save the invoice. You must definitely use the reference number when paying!

You should choose a license at once so that it is enough for the whole season. E.G. if you were born on December 31, 1992 or earlier and you intend to compete in the adult league series during 2011, get an adult competition license.

Tiiu Tuomi will help you with license matters at the association's office, tel. 09 3481 2505.

HOW SHOULD YOU ACT IN THE SITUATION OF AN ACCIDENT?
In the event of an accident, the most important thing is to seek treatment quickly and save all expense vouchers related to the treatment of the accident. If the accident requires extensive/expensive treatments, you should check in advance with Pohjola ( www.pohjola.fi ) which treatment facility you should apply to.

Teemu Leirilä in Copenhagen, Juho and Petteri at home

The taekwondo athletes' gym had a break from normal training between Christmas and the New Year, but Juho K and Petteri spent the week training like a camp with the help of Kim Sinisalo. At the same time, Teemu went to find his own series' opposition in Denmark, where the Danish Olympic qualifying team had a sparring camp. Teemu's week included e.g. 11 full matches, so the sparring with the World Cup silver medalist was for all the money.

Mahama Cho, a heavyweight competitor of the English national team, trained in our gym the week before Christmas and helped Teemu prepare for the Olympic qualifiers. In the week before the camp, at the tournament in Paris, Cho took a clear victory over the reigning Olympic champion and has success from other tournaments as well.

Only 22 years old, Cho is one of the most promising heavyweights in the world. He thanked the opportunity to train with an experienced top. "After these training experiences, Teemu is one of my favorites in the European qualifying tournament. He definitely has a good chance for an Olympic spot," said Cho.

Juho and Teemu at the Paris Open

The Paris Open, which served as a general practice for the Olympic qualifiers, went moderately well for the Finns. Suvi Mikkonen won two matches and lost to Great Britain's Jade Jones, the series' reigning World Cup silver medalist. Juho Kostiannen also won two matches, but lost to Italy's Claudio Treviso in the third round. Teemu Heino's path to the first round against Croatia's Vedran Golec was already cut off with a 2-2 referee's decision, as even the Extra Set did not bring clarity about the winner.

The Paris Open was the last big tournament before the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the end of January.
