Belgium Open 2013 report

Taekwondo BelgiumA team of taekwondo athletes

Women under 46 kg

Tanja Lovikka – Beth Worthington (GBR) 1 – 8

Cadet girls under 44 kg

Sophia Vassilaki – Viviane Tranquille (CAN) 4 – 8

Sampo Pajulampi was the coach and Kai Lohman was part of the support team.

Good matches

The starting point for the tournament was that both athletes are in their first major European tournament, and thus the expectations for the results were set quite modest. The combination of travel, a gigantic tournament, unknown opponents and opponents known to be tough were already big stress factors beforehand. However, both of our representatives adapted well. Traveling and other activities went like clockwork, and the new things did not prevent high-quality preparation. The situation was therefore good, as both athletes, being almost the same size, were able to work smoothly to support each other in preparation.

Tanya

Tanja already played on Saturday. The weight loss was successful and on the day of the match, the atmosphere was suitably buzzing before the match. The opponent came from England and represented a good international middle level. Tanja didn't quite stay on board yet, because the opponent's good move closed the close match and the distances remained too long despite a good effort. However, good performance, and the development targets were easy to analyze. After working on them, we are one step further.

Sophia

Sophia's match on Sunday was an exciting battle. The opponent, who was almost two years older, was a strong fighter. Hard kicks combined with good technique were a combination worthy of a bronze medal. Sophia's back spin kick in the second round hit the neck and the judges drew points for a long time, because the cadets did not have video review. However, there were no points and the rest of the match was spent in chasing positions. Sophia was very involved in the match, but in the last moments no more points were scored.

Summary of the team

The performances were good, but there is work to be done. The jump to this level from the domestic games is big, and success requires a new gear in the eye.

General considerations

In general, I followed the matches of Tanja and Sophia's series the most, but of course with a side eye I managed to catch a glimpse of other Finns' matches as well as the whole tournament in general.

Aces High

In general, it can be said that the battle is won or lost in the air. This applies especially to the women's and smaller men's series, why not top-end matches in the big men's as well. Tactically, you have to take into account that the other can hit up once and playing zero zero like this is not an option. In addition, your focus must be on the main hits and playing them open. Your own protection must be functional and the coach must be alert with the card game.

The general formula doesn't work

The formulaic contestants did not succeed in the competition. The winning type relied on its own basic strengths, was able to reset the opponent's basic strengths and, above all, managed to surprise its opponent. More and more attention should be paid to this.

You have to have a big bunch of different basic schemes in your back pocket. You have to know how to read the opponent's basic pattern and handle your own plot with honor. In addition, you must be able to break your own and the opponent's patterns.

The arrangements didn't work either

The tournament was quite chaotic, so it served as a good school for the inexperienced team. However, for cadets, paying 50 euros for two sets of matches without video review is a little unfortunate. Especially when getting to the match was an endless grind in various places.

All results can be found at http://www.tpss.nl/Resultdetail.asp?ID=135

Next, the train is heading Nurmijärvi through to Spain.

Here's Tanja's match one set at a time:

Tanja in Belgium, 1st batch.

Tanja in Belgium, 2nd round.

Tanja in Belgium, 3rd round.

Almost 50 competitors in taekwondo athletes' indoor competitions

2.4. almost 50 athletes from their own club and from Vantaa, Espoo, Kerava, Nurmijärvi, Helsinki and Forssa sweated in the organized indoor competitions. The evening was quite busy and I didn't get to finish until well after nine.

As for the sleds, we started with a joint warm-up and then got into close battles. The large number of participants limited most of the matches to two or three, but the wildest ones managed to take five matches.

Finnish Taekwondo Federation's referee trainer Tatu Iivanainen was also present, this time mainly in the capacity of a coach. Tatu gave valuable tips on judging and our own judge Janne Rita got good sparring for the upcoming tournaments.

Thanks to all participants!

At the taekwondo athletes match camp, approx. 40 trainers

TaekwondoKim Sinisalo and the instructors of TU11 got the enthusiasts going

The first workout was directed by Sampo Pajulampi and focused on movement and combining different techniques with it. In addition, hand-to-hand saves played a big role. Both kids and adults got themselves moving briskly in their own sessions.

In the second part, Kim Sinisalo directed a practice focused more on match situations. The new innovative exercises provoked thoughts and gave everyone a challenge.

The longest trip to the camp was made this time by Paimio's group of 5, led by their coach Mikko Yrjövuori. In addition, coaches from our own club were seen from Malmi, Riihimäki, Kerava, Vantaa, Espoo and Helsinki.

Loviisa's open success for Taekwondo athletes

A total of 11 taekwondo athletes took part in the Loviisa games. There were first timers as well as standard equipment.

Juniors

In the boys' D2 under 30kg series, Luca Leskinen suffered an opening loss to Hipko Team's Jopi Helle. In the same series, Joni Ståhl won the first match in style, but succumbed to Christmas in the semifinals. However, bronze for both boys.

In the boys' D2 under 34kg series, the first-timer Alireza Piraveisi showed convincing performances, winning both of his matches with clear numbers. So gold for Alireza with a great performance.

In the boys' D2 under 37kg series, there was a final between TU11 boys, when Megii Moullaev and Eddie Quinones both clear their way to the final. Megii was better this time and took the gold medal. Great matches from Eddie again and this time a silver medal.

In the boys' D1 under 34kg series, Sisu Salmenniemi lost in the semi-final round of a very tight and tough match in the overtime.

This time, Aaha Moullaev competed in a higher weight category, but fought nicely to a tie until the very end of the match, but had to give up in the last seconds for silver.

Sophia Vassilaki started with a win in the girls' C1 -44kg series. In the final, however, Sophia had to bow to Jyväskylä's Vilja Aalto.

Sara Quinones did not find an opponent this time in the E-jobs under 28kg series, but we hope that Sara will get to fight for the first time.

There were medals

Adults

Among the adults, as usual, 2012's Jaakko Saha was included, for whom only one opposition was found this time. Jaakko dominated the match and took the job home in style, even though headers were forbidden in Jaakko's series this time.

Sami Leskinen was an unlucky warrior in the men's amateur series. Sami's hand was broken in the first match and the games stopped at that. Get well soon Sam!

In the women's under 49kg category, Tanja Lovikka won her first match by clear numbers, but had to admit that Jyväskylä's Lotta Linna was better in the final.

Support forces

Janne Rita represented Taekwondo athletes as a judge. The coaches are Juho Kostiainen, Juho Ranta and Petteri Kauppinen. In addition, a support group consisting of parents supported and cheered ours meritoriously.

See you at the camp!

Taekwondo competitors and the judge performed very well in the Loviisa Games and the team spirit was just right. The next competitions will be held in Nurmijärvi on 13 April, where we will hopefully see an even bigger team. Before that, you can compete in the indoor competitions on 2.4.
